Prevention of Cervical Cancer

No Cervical Cancer (PINCC) is a group of doctors and counselors; we travel to many places around the world to help women stay healthy. We are most interested in helping to keep women from getting cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is a terrible disease that kills 280,000 women every year worldwide, mostly in less developed countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The saddest part is that it is completely preventable! We are working to prevent it. Click here to learn how you can get involved.

Who is likely to get Cervical Cancer?

Women over the age of 35, women who had sex before they were 15, and women with HIV have the highest risk. Women who have had many sex partners or whose partner has had many sexual contacts are also at higher risk.

What is a Cervix?

The cervix is the mouth of the uterus (womb) that sits at the back of the vagina. It's where a sperm gets in to make a baby, and how the baby comes out later.

Cervical cancer is caused by an invisible virus that is spread by having sex, just like HIV. It's called HPV (human papillomavirus), and more than half of women have it by age 35. Most men and women don't know they have it, unless they get the kind that causes warts: little bumps you may see or feel on the woman's or man's genitals. Warts are not cancer.

How is cervical cancer prevented?

The HPV virus gets into the skin of the vagina and cervix and lives there. Many infections are cleared up by your own immune system; but the bad kinds can stay, and slowly cause changes in the cervix that may become cancer, over a 5 to 10 year time period. These abnormal cells are called dysplasia. If it is found and treated early, it can be completely removed. We can look at your cervix with a simple test, called VIA (washing it with vinegar), and see the dysplasia. Then we can freeze them, or remove them. VIA is even better than a Pap test in finding the dysplasia. It is not painful, just a little uncomfortable.

If we see precancerous cells, we will take a biopsy to be sure. This is a small pinch of skin, which we send to a laboratory for examination under a microscope. We will also check inside the cervix to be sure we don't miss anything.

If we think it is not too severe, and we can see all of it, we can freeze and kill the dysplasia. This is called cryotherapy. It causes a little menstrual-type cramps for a few minutes; we can give you medicine (Ibuprofen) to help the cramps. The frozen dead skin will gradually fall off, while new healthy skin grows underneath. You will have a watery discharge for about 2 or 3 weeks. You should not put anything in the vagina or have sex till the discharge stops, so it heals well.

If the dysplasia is severe, or we can't see it all, we need to remove those areas of the cervix. We will make it all numb so you don't feel any pain; then we use a thin wire with electricity to remove the bad parts. This is called LEEP. We will send the tissue to a lab to be sure there was no cancer, only dysplasia. We will use a tiny electric ball to stop the bleeding; then we paint the cervix with a mustard-like medicine to help it heal.

Afterwards, you will have a discharge of blood, like a period, and a dark grainy stuff like coffee grounds for 2 to 3 weeks. It is best not to do any heavy lifting or exercise for a week, so the bleeding doesn't get worse. It is very important that you don't put anything in the vagina during the healing time, about 1 month, so it can heal up well. Otherwise you could have more bleeding, or re-infect the healthy new skin that is growing. Be sure to explain this to your partner. Using a condom for 2 months after treatment also helps to prevent recurrence. 9 out of 10 women have no more dysplasia after treatment; but you should be re-examined in 6 months to be sure, as a few women need another treatment.

Having treatment for dysplasia will not keep you from getting pregnant or having a baby. However, you should not have LEEP or cryotherapy while you are pregnant. Tell the doctor or counselor if you think you might be pregnant.

If you have HIV or AIDS, the HPV virus will develop towards cancer much more rapidly. Even if you have been treated in the past, the pre-cancerous cells can recur. It is very important that you have frequent, regular examinations for dysplasia (every 6 months).

Creative chocolates

Many of the old myths about chocolate and health and crumbling under the weight of scientific fact. The once-prevalent believe that something that tastes so good just can't be good for you has given way to a more balanced picture of chocolate and cocoa products and their relation to health and nutrition. Here are brief reviews of recent findings that correct common mis perceptions of the effects of chocolate on health.

Myth: Confectionery is a major cause of tooth decay.
Truth: Tooth decay is primarily the result of poor oral hygiene. Dental caries (another word for cavities) are caused by any foods containing ferment able carbohydrates that are left on the teeth for too long. In fact, there are ingredients found in chocolate products that may retard the tooth decaying process.

Myth: Chocolate is high in caffeine.
Truth: The amount of caffeine in a piece of chocolate candy is significantly lower than that in coffee, tea or cola drinks. For instance, a 5 oz cup of instant coffee has between 40 and 108 mg of caffeine, while a 1 oz milk chocolate bar contains only 6 mg and many confectionery items have no caffeine at all.

Myth: Confectionery has a high fat content and will lead to weight gain.
Truth: "Candy, in moderation, can be part of low-fat eating. In fact, an occasional sweet treat helps you stick to a healthy eating plan." - Annette B. Natow, Ph.D., R.D., author of The Fat Counter and The Fat Attack Plan.

Cholesterol
Q. What is the level of cholesterol in a 1.65 oz. bar of milk chocolate?
A. The American Heart Association recommends that daily cholesterol intake not exceed 300 mg. A chocolate bar is actually low in cholesterol. A 1.65 oz. bar contains only 12 mg! A one oz piece of cheddar cheese contains 30 mg of cholesterol — more than double the amount found in a chocolate bar.

Sodium
Q. What is the level of sodium in a one oz milk chocolate bar?
A. According to the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, the maximum Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for sodium is 1,100 to 3,300 mg daily. A 1.5 oz milk chocolate bar contains 41 mg, while the same size dark chocolate bar contains only 5 mg On the other hand, a 1.5 oz serving of iced devil's food cake has a whopping 241 mg — many times more than chocolate bars.

Fat
Q. How much fat is there in a 1.5 oz. chocolate bar?
A. Health professionals and nutritionists suggest that calories from fat should account for no more than 30% of your daily caloric intake. A 1.5 oz. milk chocolate bar contains 13 grams of fat; a dark chocolate bar of the same weight contains 12.

Acne: No Link to Chocolate
Over the past two decades, clinical studies have exonerated chocolate as a cause or exacerbating factor in the development or persistence of acne. In fact, many dermatologists doubt that diet plays any significant role in acne.

At the University of Missouri, student volunteers with mild to moderate acne each consumed nearly 20 ounces of chocolate over a 48 hour period. Examination of lesions on the fifth day of the test and again on the seventh day showed no new lesions other than those that might be expected based upon the usual variations the subjects had exhibited during several weeks of observation prior to the test.

In a research study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, a group of 65 subjects were fed chocolate bars containing nearly ten times the amount of chocolate liquor as a normal 1.5 oz commercially available chocolate bar. A control group ate a bar that tasted like chocolate, but actually contained no chocolate liquor. At the conclusion of the test, the average acne condition of those eating the chocolate was virtually identical to that of the controls, who had eaten the imitation bars.

Chocolate and Allergy
It is possible for a person to be allergic to any food, including chocolate. But recent evidence suggests that allergy to chocolate may be relatively rare.

The actual incidence of allergic sensitivity to chocolate is far less common than positive reactions to skin scratch tests would seem to indicate. In at least one double-blind study to determine the correlation positive skin tests for chocolate allergy and the manifestation of clinically observable symptoms, researchers could find only one patient out of a possible 500 who showed both a positive response to the skin test and an objective clinical reaction after eating chocolate.

To confirm food allergy or food sensitivity, a "challenge" of the food in question is administered. To yield accurate results, the challenge should be conducted under double-blind conditions; that is, neither the investigator nor the patient knows in advance whether the food administered is the suspected substance or a placebo. This allows for objective evaluation of clinical symptoms.

According to S. Allan Bock, M.D., a researcher in food allergy at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, evaluation of hundreds of patients at that institution has shown no confirmed allergic reaction to chocolate during double-blind challenges.

Caffeine and Theobromine
Caffeine and theobromine belong to a group of substances known as methylxanthines. Caffeine occurs naturally in coffee, tea, cola and, to some degree, cocoa beans. It may also be added to cola drinks and is a component of certain over-the- counter and prescription medications. Theobromine is found in cocoa beans; tea contains trace amounts.

Caffeine
The amount of caffeine ingested when people eat chocolate in normal quantities is very small. One ounce of milk chocolate, for example, contains 6 mg of caffeine, little more than the amount found in a cup of decaffeinated coffee. Moreover, there have been no reports in the scientific literature of any health problems among children or adults as a result of the caffeine consumed in chocolate.

Theobromine
Although theobromine is chemically related to caffeine, it lacks caffeine's stimulant effect on the central nervous system (CNS). In fact, theobromine is virtually inert as a CNS stimulant.

Despite the weakness of theobromine's effect on the brain, many people have mistakenly assumed that it is effective in warding off fatigue and sleep, especially when it is consumed in combination with caffeine, as in chocolate.

To test this assumption, researchers compared the effect of caffeine, theobromine and a placebo in a clinical study. They found that theobromine administered in a dose of 500 mg (the amount of theobromine in approximately 11 oz of milk chocolate consumed in one sitting) did not increase pulse rate significantly more than the placebo. Caffeine, when compared to theobromine and the placebo, produced significant CNS stimulation.

In a double-blind clinical study, subjects ingested measured quantities of caffeine and theobromine, separately and together, at random. Caffeine altered the subjects' own estimates of the time it took to fall asleep, as well as the soundness of sleep, in a dose-dependent fashion. A dose of 300 mg. of theobromine, however, had no detectable effect on sleep. When administered in combination with caffeine, theobromine neither increased nor decreased the sleep effects of caffeine.

Dental Caries
Tooth decay has become less of a problem for American children over the last 25 years. Between 1960 and 1980 the incidence of cavities dropped by 50%. Today, one-third of all Americans of college age have never had a single cavity, thanks largely to fluoride delivered in water systems, toothpastes and professional fluoride treatments.

Fluoride, good oral hygiene, and professional check-ups and prophylactic treatments are keys to minimizing the incidence of tooth decay. Diet is another factor.

It is widely accepted that all foods containing "fermentable carbohydrate" have the potential to contribute to caries formation. Fermentable carbohydrate is present in most starches and all sugars, including those that occur naturally in foods and those added in processed foods. The frequency and duration of tooth exposure to fermentable carbohydrate have been identified as a factor in caries.

Although chocolate contains fermentable carbohydrates, a number of dental research studies suggest that chocolate may be less apt to promote tooth decay than has been traditionally believed.

Research at the Forsyth Dental Center in Boston has shown that chocolate has the ability to offset the acid-producing potential of the sugar it contains. Acid, produced by certain oral bacteria that digest, or "ferment", sugars, may damage tooth enamel and cause decay.

Other theories have been advanced to explain the fact that chocolate appears to be less cariogenic (cavity-producing) than its fermentable carbohydrate content would seem to indicate. In a study conducted at the Eastman Dental Center, certain chocolate products tested were found to be among the snack foods contributing least to tooth decay. The researchers reported that milk chocolate's protein, calcium and phosphate content may provide protective effects on tooth enamel. In addition, because of its natural fat content, chocolate clears the mouth relatively faster than other confections; this is important because the time fermentable carbohydrate remains n contact with tooth surfaces has a bearing on the food's cariogenic potential.

Weight Control
Contrary to popular stereotype, most overweight people do not eat excessive amounts of cake, cookies, confections or other foods containing sugar. Their sugar intake tends, in fact, to be below average.

More important in controlling weight is the total number of calories consumed each day and the amount of energy expended in physical activity. Overweight children, for example, are generally less active than those of normal weight; thus, they may remain obese even when their caloric intake is reasonable or even limited.

Moreover, many people overestimate the calories in chocolate. A 1.5 oz milk chocolate bar contains approximately 220 calories, low enough to incorporate into a weight control diet. The occasional chocolate confection may also reduce the possibility of severe bingeing, which can occur as a result of feeling deprived of highly satisfying foods such as chocolate.

Healthy Food

Going on a diet can be a good thing; however, there are so many newfangled diet styles out there that you just do not know which ones work and which ones are just fads.

But regardless of whatever dieting system or style you are an advocate of, there are ten kinds of food that you should be ingesting a lot of to keep yourself trim, healthy and beautiful.

Top 10 Healthy Foods

Fruits Research proves that eating at least 5 portions of fruits each day has very real health benefits. It can help to prevent heart diseases and some cancers.
Essential fatty acids (EFA). Essential fatty acids, also known as the good fat, is needed to keep the cells of the body functioning properly. EFA also helps improve the condition of the skin and makes the hair and fingernails grow healthier.
Garlic. Garlic is high in antioxidants and is a kind of food that is widely known to prevent cancer. Garlic also helps lower the bodys cholesterol levels and reduces blood pressure as well.
Green tea. Green tea is full of antioxidants that help prevent specific kinds of cancer from developing in the body. It also pumps up the immune system and helps lower the levels of cholesterol in the body.
Green vegetables. Vitamins A and E, as well as fiber and iron, are found abundantly in green, leafy vegetables. Vitamin A retains the moisture in the eyes, the skin and the mucous membrane, while Vitamin E helps maintain the skin's elasticity. On the other hand, fiber improves digestion, and iron is needed for the production of red blood cells.
Milk. Milk is the best source of calcium and vitamin D for the body. Calcium combined with vitamin D is good for keeping the bones and teeth strong, and it prevents diseases like osteoporosis. Milk also has vitamin B2 and B12, which coaxes the body to produce more red blood cells. Red blood cells bring oxygen to the cells. Having a healthy supply of red blood cells swimming in the blood stream keeps the hair and skin looking healthier.
Soy. Soy also has cancer-preventing antioxidants as well as Vitamin E and amino acids. It helps the skin retain its smoothness and elasticity.
Vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts the immune system and makes the body less vulnerable to disease. Vitamin C is also an important key in the body's collagen production, collagen being a chemical that keeps the skin elastic and wrinkle-free.
Yogurt. Yogurt is also a good source of calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B. Aside from these, yogurt contains friendly bacteria that assists in digestion, hydrates the skin and clears the immune system.
Chocolate. Yes, you read it right. Chocolate is an essential food to eat to keep beautiful. Chocolate encourages the production of endorphins and serotonin, hormones that generate a nice and pleasant feeling for the body.
You look beautiful if you feel beautiful.

Do not forget water! Water keeps the body hydrated. When the body is hydrated, the skin becomes smooth, supple and youthful. The hair has more shine and bounce when there is enough water in the body, and the nails are stronger. Water also flushes out the waste and toxins out of the body.

Sugar

The Dangers of Sugar

To a certain degree, we all love our sugar, even though we do not have a sweet tooth.

We love them in our cakes and cookies and ice cream. We love them in our chocolate bars and moccachinos and iced caf- lattes with whipped cream. Sugar is sweet, and sweet feels nice and good.

But as our mothers always tell us, too much of a good thing can spoil it and make it a bad thing. Nothing can be a better example of this than sugar, because too much sugar is just bad for our body.

Why is too much sugar bad for the body? Here are ten different reasons why we should all keep ourselves from going on a sugar high.

Tooth decay. We all know this, as this is something that has been ingrained into our minds by our mothers since our very childhood. We have been taught to brush our teeth after every meal and before we go to sleep because when sugar is left on our teeth, especially after a binge on ice cream, it causes our teeth to decay faster.
Gum disease. Another thing when we let sugar sit on our teeth is that it can also lead to gum infection. Because of the way our body reacts to different kinds of infection, gum infection can in turn lead to inflammation of the coronary artery.
Unstable blood glucose. Eating too much sugar causes our blood sugars to go haywire. When the sugar levels in our blood fluctuate, they lead us to feeling fatigue and exhaustion. Headaches and mood swings are also apparent when the blood glucose is unstable. Moreover, the more sugar we take in, the more unbalanced our blood glucose becomes, and the more sugar our body craves in order to fix the imbalance it perceives.
Obesity, diabetes and heart disease. This is also somewhat of a common knowledge for all of us. Sugar in the blood that is too much for the body to consume completely is stored as fat. Too much fat in the body can lead to obesity, and obesity is known to trigger diabetes and heart disease.
Malfunctioning immune system. The bacteria and yeast that are present in our blood stream feed on sugar and cause them to multiply. If there is an imbalance in the growth of these bacteria and yeast, our immune system may not be able to handle it. It could, therefore, weaken.
Chromium deficiency. Ironically, too much sugar in the body causes the body's ability to regulate sugar levels to go on strike. This is because most of the sugar we eat is already refined and lacks chromium, the chemical needed to help manage the levels of sugar in our blood.
Nutrients. Consuming sugar makes the hunger pangs go away. That is why we are often told not to eat sweets before a main meal. When we take in too much sugar, we do not feel the need to eat food that contains more of the important nutrients that our body needs, such as vitamins, iron, calcium and magnesium. There is a difference between feeling full after every meal and gaining the nutrition you need from every meal.
Stress. When we eat too much sugar, we go on a sugar high because of the energy boost we get from the sugar consumption. But this sugar high is only temporary; our energy level takes a plunge afterwards. When this happens, the body releases hormones to bring the sugar level in our blood back to optimum level, and these hormones include the stress hormones: adrenaline, cortisol and epinephrine. These hormones make us irritable and stressed out.
Aging. When we eat too much sugar, the process called glycation can occur. When this happens, some of the sugar we consume sticks to the proteins in our body, causing our body tissues to lose their elasticity. It is not just our skin that is affected, but also our internal organs. The faster that the body loses its elasticity, the faster aging occurs.
Cognition. Too much sugar in the body also affects our mind's ability to learn and recognize.

Thus, before you pop that chocolate bar into your mouth, think again. How much sugar have you had today?

Smoking Weight Loss Plan

It is a sad reality that our culture and society is so youth-oriented. The image of what is considered beautiful is what is exemplified today on the runways: those stick-thin, teenage gazelles with boney arms and legs, whose cheeks look a touch sunken and whose cheekbones are a touch too prominent because of their thinness. It is the template that most women right now are trying so hard to fit in, so much that they would do anything to lose the extra weight that they think they are carrying.

Some of these women subscribe to various diets, whether scientifically proven or just fads, while some exert all effort to burn away the extra weight. some take diet teas and diet pills, and some even go through surgical procedures just to suck the fat out of their bodies. Sadly, there are some women who will not stop at anything to lose weight, who are truly convinced that the only way to be considered beautiful is to fit the size and shape of the ideal image that society holds.

Unfortunately, smoking is one of those means that some of those women use to lose weight. Why smoking? It is because smoking is one of the fastest ways out there to lose weight. Smoking accelerates weight loss because it kills the appetite and quickly burns the extra weight off the body’s system.

But just as unfortunate is that while smoking deadens the appetite, it also burns away the nutrients that our body needs to be healthy and functioning properly. While we may think that the quick weight loss that smoking brings us is good, in the long run, it is only going to cost us our health.

Did you know that smoking is currently the leading cause of death in the United States? According to the United States’ National Institutes for Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases, diseases directly resulting from smoking kill more than 400,000 people in the United States. Smoking also increases the risk of a person getting cancer. And not just cancer of the lungs; smoking is linked to cancer of the cervix, the larynx, the esophagus, the kidneys, the pancreas, even breast cancer.

Smoking also robs the body of calcium, so women who smoke are more prone to developing osteoporosis than women who do not smoke. In addition, women who smoke are also more likely to give birth to premature babies and babies with congenital defects.

Smoking may be a quick fix to anyone’s weight problem, but in the long run, the detriments that it brings to our health is not really worth it. Regardless of what image society projects, a truly beautiful woman is not just someone who is thin and can fit into size six clothes. A truly beautiful woman has a body that is fit and toned and whose skin glows with health.

If you want to lose weight, smoking is not the ticket for you. Rather than smoking, you should try simple exercises. You do not have to go to the gym to get some exercise. You could chose to walk when you need to go to the neighborhood store instead of drive. Also, instead of eating three times a day, you can try eating small, nutritious snacks every two or three hours. In this way, you will not feel hungry at all, and yet your body will remain nourished and actually increase its metabolism.

Garlic Cold Prevention and Remedy

Garlic (Allium sativum) is not only a culinary mainstay, but also an antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal tonic.
To help prevent or lessen the severity and symptoms of a cold, eat two cloves of raw garlic at the onset of symptoms.

Chopping or mashing garlic releases the herb's full potential as the active component, allicin, forms only on contact with air.

To make garlic oil, crush a few cloves into some olive oil. Let the oil sit for a few days at room temperature, and then strain.
If you use powders, tinctures or other commercial garlic products, choose those standardized for allicin content.

For a less-intense flavor, put garlic in applesauce or mix with honey.
To avoid garlic mouth, don't chew it and it won't stay on your breath

Natural Breasts Care

Herbs And Vitamins For Healthy Breasts

There are a number of herbs and vitamins for healthy breasts that show promise in the prevention of breast cancer and fibrocystic breast disease (non-cancerous breast lumps).

Cancer of the breast is the leading cause of death for women in the US where it is estimated that 1 in 9 women will get breast cancer before she is 85.

The inclusion of herbs and vitamins for healthy breasts, accompanied by a wholesome nutritious diet and exercise are important factors in maintaining healthy breasts.

One of the main contributing factors to breast cancer seems to be hormonal imbalance  in particular the hormone estrogen, which can promote abnormal tissue growth in breasts. However, there are a number of herbs that women can include in their diets which work to gently balance women's hormones and help in the promotion of healthy breasts.

Red Clover - This herb has been used by many different cultures in the treatment of cancer. Red clover contains isoflavones, a class of phytoestrogens that are structurally similar to estrogen.
In premenopausal women with normal estrogen levels, isoflavones have an anti-estrogen effect. In postmenopausal women with low estrogens, isoflavones act as weak estrogens.

Red Clover is also helpful in the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women which is related to declining estrogen levels.

Furthermore, Red Clover is useful for relieving menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, reduced libido, and vaginal dryness. It should be noted, however, that women who are pregnant and breastfeeding should avoid taking Red Clover.

Green Tea - Several studies have proven that Green Tea is beneficial in the reduction of solid tumor formation and the risk of breast cancers in women. In fact, preliminary research suggests that flavonoids found in green tea reduce the risk of several different kinds of cancers including prostate cancer, colon cancer, and gastric cancer.

A recent Japanese study explored the green tea's protection against breast cancer. It was found that women who consumed more green tea had a lower number of tumor growth. And, in a seven-year study it was found that women with stage I or II cancer who consumed five or more cups of green tea a day had approximately half the recurrence rate of those women who consumed four cups or less.

Turmeric - Because of its anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties, Turmeric may be a useful herb for healthy breasts. The medicinal properties of Turmeric have for millennia been known to the ancient Indians and its medical properties have been expounded in the Ayurvedic texts.

A recent study involving mice has shown that Turmeric slows the spread of breast cancer into lungs and other body parts. Other studies have shown that turmeric can be effective in fighting a number of STDs including Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

In addition to herbs, there are a number of vitamins for healthy breasts that should be included in the diet as well. Vitamin A (Beta Carotene) for example, has been cited in a number of studies as important to healthy breasts and breast cancer prevention. Additionally, it is useful for the reduction of fibrocystic breast disease.
Iodine, a mineral which is commonly found in sea vegetables such as kelp is another nutrient that has been shown to retard the growth of fibrocystic breast disease.
